A Grok Telegram bot combines two independent connections: a Telegram bot token for message delivery and an xAI API key for model inference. DeployHermes supports Telegram as the channel and xAI as a provider, so set up and test each boundary separately.

## Create the two required connections

Create a Telegram bot through Telegram's bot tooling and keep its token private. In DeployHermes, connect the bot in the Telegram settings flow. Separately, connect an xAI API key in provider settings and wait for the xAI validation result.

The Telegram token answers, “where should a reply go?” The xAI key answers, “which provider may generate the reply?” Mixing them up is a common cause of setup errors.

## Pair a person before testing work

Use the pairing flow to associate your Telegram chat with the workspace. Keep the allowed-user list narrow while you test. Send a simple request that does not invoke an external side effect, then confirm the response arrives in the same Telegram chat.

Telegram's Bot API is the channel contract. Hermes Agent adds the runtime behavior around the delivered message; xAI remains the model provider. Neither connection implies an official product partnership.

## Expand only after the loop works

Once a test reply works, try a request that uses the agent's intended tool boundary. Watch for an approval request rather than assuming a tool action happened. Keep provider and Telegram logs distinct so you can tell authentication failures from delivery failures.

If the bot is shared, document who may pair, who may rotate credentials, and what to do when a chat is unpaired. A short runbook prevents a channel issue from turning into a credential-sharing habit.
